Ego Said/Spirit Said -------------------- From: parinell@ATHENA.MIT.EDU (James C Parinella) Subject: Ego Said/Spirit Said Date: 17 Oct 1994 19:18:31 GMT I am psyched to find out this newsgroup exists, but I am VERY disturbed to find out that someone has been posting using MY name. A computer friend of mine finally told me about this "Testosterone" guy, and I was able to intercept the following post. Can you believe this guy? ------ ALBANY, NY--The juggernaut known as Big Ego Ultimate continued rolling towards Lexington, Kentucky, with a convincing 19-14 victory over Cojones in the Finals of the Northeast Regional Tournament this weekend. In outscoring their opponents 85-26, Death or Glory won their ninth tournament in nine tries this year. DOG showed only minor flaws in jumping out to a five point halftime lead and cruising through the second half to give Boston its third straight Regional championship and a probable #1 seed again at Nationals. Cojones clearly is not the vaunted NY, NY team of old, as it missed the tough defense and attitude of Jon Gewirtz and the consistent offense of Pat King, Dave Blau, and others. Death or Glory, meanwhile, showing less is more, unveiled its full squad for the first time this year, and showed traces of excellence with its highly efficient offense and aggressive team defense. The Cornell Buds also advanced from the region. Additionally, 15 other "open" teams and some women's teams played this weekend. The highlight of the weekend was an attempt by RC Pablo "These Are the Rules" Martinez to put an end to the feebleness known as "frisbee time". Even though the game to go to Nationals was crowded by darkness, and even though Saturday's first round games were capped, and even though everyone knew that teams could take points at 10 AM, none of the quarterfinals started much before 11, so those games were short, the scores being 5-3, 6-2, 8-3, and 12-0. As they are prone to do, the players complained. Nothing came of it. Good. Jim "Where's the Competition" Parinella ------------- What a jerk! Now, here's the real story: A wicked awesome weekend was had by all at NE Regionals. The tournament party was a real blast. They played a Grate mix of the Dead and Phish, with some Talking Heads livening things up occasionally for some cool dancing. We drank lots of beer, and the teams that were eliminated on Saturday had a chance to discover the "real" tournament. There was a great game called "Melnik". It involved frisbees and beer, and although I'm not really sure of the rules anymore, I enjoyed it, since we all got to play as long as we wanted to, and we were all on the same team. There was a three way tie for Spirit of the Game, with each of the teams insisting that the other ones be honored instead. We were all pretty wasted anyway, what with the abundance of Ganja wafting through the atmosphere, and then the tunes came on again, so we forgot about that. Because of that, people showed up right on Frisbee time on Sunday morning, but RC Pablo "There is no You in UPA" Martinez tried to break the time honored tradition of starting whenever we feel like it. He imposed draconian measures and asphyxiated the quarterfinals. Dude, when an important game is played to 5-3, you know the game has gotten out of the hands of the players and into the arms of Big Brother. What's next, referees? The weather was great, the spirit was great, and everyone had a good time. The open finals weren't as bad as I thought. There were a few bogus calls on both NY and Boston's part, but that's to be expected. On one occasion, Kenny Dobyns laid out for a catch, then by the time he got to his feet, the Big Ego guy was already at stall three, so Kenny informed him that the stall couldn't start until he established a pivot foot. So the Big Ego guy goes, "I know, but we never play it that way." And they never play that you can't spike it, either. The REST of the tournament had great spirit, though. Lots of violations happened but weren't called, people were out of bounds but they made a good effort so they were called in, and everyone thought that the teams that lost were nice people. All in all, your typical weekend. Jim "Spirit is Alive and Well" Elias-Parinella
