April

Discs in the Mist, Lehigh, PA

6-1, 1st

Lost to We Smoke Weed

Had to talk our way into the A pool in the "largest tournament ever", then lost our first game ever to WSW. Came back to beat them in a windy final, perhaps foreshadowing a later reputation as "a good wind team."

Turkey Swamp, NJ

5-1, 1st

Lost to winless Amherst

Round robin tournament, lost on the "Field of Death" first thing Sunday morning.

May

Mothers Day, Philly

6-0, 1st

Beat WSW 13-8 in finals

Had 9 players. Had "Double Greatest" for a goal.

Regionals, Albany

7-0, 1st

Beat WSW 15-10 in finals

Alex gets a concussion. Wins over all three of the NY-aftermath teams (WSW, Cool Moose Café, and Graffiti)

June

Easterns, Lehigh

7-0, 1st

Beat Philly and Ring both by 19-17

In semis against Philly, in what they still refer to as "The Strip", I made a pivotal late call that helped us win. In finals against Ring, an opponent spiked it just outside the end zone. Alex got point blocked on our goal line to make it 14-14, and we burst out laughing. Lightning struck nearby as we were standing outside near our cars during a lightning delay.

September

Tuneup, Chicago

7-0, 1st

Chesapeake and Portland

First Tuneup. Clam unnerved Chesapeake en route to 17-6 semis win. Jeremy Seeger plays and hurts hamstring, leading to spandex shorts at Nationals.

Philly, Tinicum

5-1, 1st

Lost to Cornell, beat WSW and Chesapeake

"Smoke and Gun", 11 players, only one of them 6’. Cojones 1-3-3 zone got them back in the semis and scared us, prompting us to figure out what they did and make our own for practice. They never played it again, while we still use it today.

October

Sectionals, Maine

4-0, 1st

Won Sectionals

Regionals, Albany

6-0, 1st

Beat Cojones

First round game Sunday morning capped on time after a "frisbee time" start, resulting in a 6-2 win. Nathan Wicks of Yale tried to bribe us to lose the next game so they could make Nationals. We told him to come back in 4 years. He said to make it 5. Beat Cojones 19-14 in finals, 6th time that year (if you include WSW, whose roster was as similar to Cojones’ as DoG’s spring roster was to its fall. OTOH, conceptually Cojones wasn’t WSW, while DoG stayed the same.)

November

Nationals, Lexington (KY)

7-0, 1st

Everyone

Started off up 9-0 on eventual semifinalist Chesapeake. Next took out Rhino in a close one, then watched them go oh-fer and throw a hotel manager into a pool. Did Ro-cham-shot in our hotel bar that night for several hours. Beat Cojones in the semis in what many regard as the Best Game Ever. Crushed Double Happiness 21-11 in finals. They scored upwind on our O to start the game, the last one upwind and the last one against the O. They were wearing lots of clothes, as it was cold.

60-3. 10 tournament wins in 10 tries. The death of big ego ultimate and the birth of "Big Ego Ultimate". Developed "The Man" offensive scheme. Had fun. Playbook (without pictures) got written down and hasn’t been formally and fully updated since. Tournament reports hit rec.sport.disc Detailing our Greatness.

BEST GAME EVER

To be considered for this label, a game ought to have many or all of the following characteristics:

1. Well-played game.

2. Important game.
3. Big plays.
4. Close game.
5. Emotional game (helps if there is history between the teams).
6. Heroes/goats.
7. Significant game.
8. Some back and forth nature.
9. Uniqueness/memorability.

Subject: Boston Rules at Largest Tournament Ever!!!
Date: 18 Apr 1994 11:24:01 -0400

BETHLEHEM PA, April 17 - Late Sunday afternoon, many, many, fans gathered outside the Goodman Campus Stadium for two eagerly anticipated match-ups between East Coast perennial powers. In the end, the Boston men and women dominated the field of 90 teams at 'Discs in the Mist... and rain... and wind... and mud', the largest tournament of the decade. Ranked dead last in division two, Death & Glory (led by Jordan 'boy' Haskell) talked itself into the premier bracket and advanced easily on Sunday. Lady Godiva romped all weekend despite strong Lehigh Valley winds and some spirited play from Lucie of D.C.. The Boston men, with eleven players including Paul Auersack, crushed a strong and spirited 'We Smoke Weed' team comprised of all the 'good' players from the five-time national and world champion New York, New York. It was a resounding victory for Boston propelling them to the top of the rankings for 1994 where they will be tough to defeat. .P.S. What happened in the other divisions?
